The concept of ANOVA can be confusing in several aspects. To start with, its name is an acronym for "ANalysis Of VAriance", but it is not used for analyzing Variances. (F and Chi-square tests are used for that.) ANOVA is used for analyzing Means. The internal calculations that it uses to do so involve analyzing Variances -- hence the name.

Dunnett's and Scheffe's tests assume equal group sizes, but that doesn't mean they can't be run if your sample sizes differ slightly. However, if the sample sizes are significantly different, then you may need to use a different post-hoc test. Can you provide more details on the sizes of your samples and the specific analysis you are trying to conduct?
